GOSPEL MUSIC ‘IN THINGS’!

Things seem to be looking up for Ugandan Gospel music. First, the genre held the Viga awards gala at a successful, albeit low key event at the Victoria hall at the Kampala Serena Hotel. From what we’ve picked on the grapevine, organisers are looking to have a bigger more resonant event next year.

Now before the year even ends, continental pay TV giants DSTV have announced 5 new channels, two of them musical with one of them dedicated to gospel music of which 90% will be local gospel, 5% south african gospel and the rest, gospel music from the rest of Africa and elsewhere.

LUCKY DUBE DEAD!!

South African Reggae musician Lucky Dube, 43, has been shot dead in the commercial capital Johannesburg.

Authorities say the singer was dropping off his son in a surburb when he was attacked by armed robbers on thursday evening.

Johannesburg police spokesperson Capt Cheryl Engelbrecht says they are still investigating the incident

In news just in, maverick Ugandan singer Jose Chameleone has been nominated in the 2007 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs).

He once again becomes the first Ugandan to get nominated in the prestigious awards.

FIRED, MARRIED AND HIRED!!

Sanyu FM’s breakfast show is minus one presenter after the gigantic Allan Kasujja (Mr. President) left for Nairobi’s Capital FM to take up the evening slot that was previously occupied by Mark Kwikiriza (the Kwicksta). He joins Seanice Kacungira who does breakfast on the same station and Brenda Z’Obbo who’s on afternoons at Classic FM as the other Ugandan Radio export to Nairobi.

The much anticipated Miss East Africa UK 2007 finally took place on 1st September at the prestigious Conway Hall, London. The event saw 21 year old Ugandan medical physics student Maureen Nyakaira steal the crown under a very stiff competition from contestants from Tanzania, Malawi, Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea. Maureen, who is a student at Cardiff University in Wales, expressed a mixed reaction to winning the crown. “I will remember this night for the rest of my life, at first I was shocked, Is it me really? But then that was my number they called,” she said.
